What we offer!

New Patient Exams

We are happy to see children from new born age to late teenage years. The Canadian Dental Association recommends that your baby be assessed within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth or by one year of age. In our experience we recommend bringing your baby for an oral exam as soon as possible, ideally right after birth.

This is beneficial because it:

  1. Gives parents the opportunity to discuss what they should be doing to help establish good oral care habits.
  2. Gives us the opportunity to identify current or potential issues (tongue or lip-tie).
  3. Helps us identify long term dental issues as your child ages.
  4. Creates a great dental experience. Bringing your child early helps them become more comfortable with the dental experience.
  5. Will allow your child to know what to expect at future dental appointments.

Preventive & Hygiene Services

Dental Hygiene or Preventive dentistry is dental care that helps maintain good oral health. It’s a combination of regular dental check-ups along with developing good habits like brushing and flossing.

There are several benefits of dental hygiene / preventive dentistry:

  1. Can reduce the risk of tooth decay
  2. Can reduce the risk of gum disease
  3. Improves and maintains proper oral hygiene
  4. Promotes good dental habits, including brushing and flossing
  5. Provides guidance on oral habits (eg. thumb sucking)
  6. Nutritional counselling
  7. Fluoride application
  8. Helps identify related health issues that may impact a child’s oral health
  9. Routine X-rays help track jaw and teeth development
  10. Recommend interceptive orthodontics if necessary
  11. Referrals to other dental specialists as needed

Pit & Fissure Sealants

Dental sealants are thin coatings that when painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars) can prevent cavities (tooth decay) for many years. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces from cavities by covering them with a protective shield that blocks out germs and food. Sealants do not replace flossing as the coating can only be applied to the biting surface and not in between teeth. *Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

The benefits of pit and fissure sealants are:

  1. Protects the biting surfaces of the molars;
  2. Sealants are quick, easy, and painless;
  3. Sealed teeth are checked at each cleaning.

Early Interceptive Orthodontic Program

How can interceptive orthodontics help your child?

The main goal of interceptive orthodontic treatment is guiding the growth and development of the jaws at an early stage. This type of treatment can prevent/minimize extensive treatments later on.

The benefits of interceptive orthodontics are:

  1. To improve oral functions
  2. To align crooked teeth
  3. To correct crossbites
  4. To guide permanent teeth in a favorable position
  5. To correct oral habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, etc.
  6. To improve aesthetics
  7. To reduce the risk of more complicated treatments in the future

Laser Frenectomies

Frenectomy is a procedure used to release the lip or tongue frenum. A restrictive lip and/or tongue frenum (tie) could be the reason why your child is having feeding difficulties, speech issues, and/or improper jaw development.

The goal is to have your child visit the dentist for well baby check up before there is an issue with their teeth and/or growth and development of the jaws. In most cases, a dental exam will let your child’s dentist catch small problems early.

The procedure can also be performed on newborn babies. As a restrictive lip or tongue may interfere with breastfeeding. This frenectomy could help to relieve your child from daily struggles.

Benefits of using a laser to carry out a frenectomy:

  1. Here at our dental office, our pediatric dentists use a CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) laser to carry out this procedure.
  2. Minimal bleeding
  3. Minimal discomfort
  4. The procedure is rapid
  5. Clean and disinfected wound

SDF Application

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid containing fluoride and silver particles. It can be considered a valuable therapy for caries management. It is applied directly to cavities with a small brush. SDF limits the growth of the bacteria, that causes tooth decay, therefore can limit the growth of the cavity. Caries lesions treated with SDF usually turn black and hard. Stopping the caries process in all targeted lesions may take several applications of SDF, and reapplication may be necessary to sustain arrest.

What are the benefits of SDF?

1. Helps stop cavities from growing and getting worse.

2. Slows the need for more invasive treatments when it is not possible to deliver the restorations

3. SDF can be used to "buy time" for very young children or non-compliant patients until they are able to cooperate with fillings and other permanent treatment options.

4. Application of SDF is fast, easy, and painless.

5. SDF can relieve tooth sensitivity.

6. Can be used to treat baby teeth that are about to fall out as an adult tooth comes in.

What you need to consider :

The biggest disadvantage of SDF is the black discoloration of cavities that would be visible.

Orafacial Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy is a program of specific exercises that target the facial and oral muscles used to chew and swallow.

These exercises strengthen the tongue and help to correct improper function of the facial and oral muscles.

The main goals of myofunctional therapy is to restore nasal breathing, correct swallowing, and correct placement of tongue at rest.

Stainless Steel & Zirconia Crowns

Primary teeth that are significantly decayed or damaged may require a crown. As a general rule, pediatric crowns are recommended in cases where a dental filling is not enough to restore the tooth. There are two types of crowns that can be used depending on many variables. One is made of stainless steel and is silver in colour. The other choice is a zirconia crown which is tooth-coloured. Depending on the circumstance, a zirconia crown can not always be used. The crowns will be cemented on a prepared tooth and when it is time for the baby tooth to fall out, no more treatment will be needed, meaning the baby tooth and covered crown will come out as one unit. One of our pediatric specialists will be happy to advise you on which crown will be better suited for your child's treatment.

What are the benefits and considerations for each type of crown?

  1. Stainless steel crowns protect the primary molars (back baby teeth) that are decayed or did not form properly;
  2. Zirconia crowns are tooth-colored and may be an option for your child's treatment;
  3. A pulp therapy may be required prior to placing your child's crown.

Space Maintainers (Band & Loop)

Primary teeth should be saved until normal exfoliation occurs. In case of premature loss of primary teeth, especially when a back primary tooth is lost or removed, space maintainers preserve the teeth's proper alignment while making sure the new teeth will erupt in its proper position .

There are different types of space maintainers that have their own indications but band and loops are the most common ones.

At Aurora Kids Dentistry we can offer the option of prefabricated band and loops. With this option there is no need to make impressions and the device can be delivered in one single appointment.

What are some considerations for space maintainers?

  1. These appliances can be dislodged with hard and sticky foods (gummy bears, big bubble gums, hard candies, sticky caramels, etc.)
  2. If the appliance becomes dislodged, save it and call the office immediately.
  3. Follow ups are necessary which can be done during routine care hygiene appointments.

Conscious Sedation

Conscious (Mild) Sedation: Alleviating Anxiety

For children who are anxious or less compliant, we utilize conscious sedation to help create a calm and relaxed environment. Conscious sedation is a safe and effective approach that allows us to treat anxious children while they remain awake. Our goal is to ensure your child's comfort throughout the procedure.

Benefits of Conscious (Mild/Moderate) Sedation:

  1. Completing Lengthy and Complex Procedures: Sedation and sleep dentistry techniques enable us to perform lengthy and complex procedures without any recollection, ensuring optimal dental care for your child.
  2. Efficiency with Multiple Procedures: With sleep dentistry techniques, we can complete multiple procedures in a single visit, minimizing the need for multiple appointments and reducing inconvenience for both you and your child.
  3. Suitability for Special Needs: Sedation and sleep dentistry are particularly beneficial for patients with special needs, including those with mental or physical disabilities, ensuring they receive the necessary dental care in a comfortable and safe manner.
  4. Addressing Dental Fears and Phobias: For children with fears or phobias of the dentist or specific procedures, sleep dentistry can help alleviate anxiety and provide a more positive dental experience.
  5. Managing Severe Gag Reflex: Patients with a severe gag reflex who find it challenging to tolerate oral procedures can benefit from sleep dentistry techniques, enabling the dentist to perform necessary treatments more effectively.

Sleep Dentistry (GA)

General Anesthesia (Sleep Dentistry): Completing Procedures Painlessly.

In certain cases, deep sedation or general anesthesia (GA) may be recommended for sleep dentistry. General anesthesia allows dental work to be completed without any sensation of pain, awareness of the procedure, or recollection afterward. Our highly trained team will assess your child's specific needs and recommend GA for sleep dentistry only if necessary.
